I wrote about ‘Ten Great Songwriters’ from Liverpool for liverpooletc.com a few years ago and Kathryn was always gonna’ be included. It’s 20 years since ‘Little Black Numbers’ emerged and took my breath away. One of the first artists I remember name-checking John Martyn (thanks, Kathryn), she’s continued to release great music ever since. ‘Heart-Shaped Stone’ is from 2013’s brilliant ‘Crown Electric’ and I could have picked three or four songs from that record to cover… but this one means the most. My father-in-law is from the Highlands and for the first ten years of my wife and I’s relationship, we were up there three or four times a year. It’s a magical place. Anyway, walking on a beach looking for heart-shaped stones is what we’ve always done on our travels, so when this song arrived from Kathryn, I felt like it was just for us. Now it is.
